The City of Spokane’s Lodging Tax Advisory Committee is seeking applications for 2011 lodging tax grants. Grant funds totaling $100,000 are to be divided among projects that promote eligible tourism and cultural activities in the City of Spokane. The grant money comes from the City’s share of taxes on overnight stays within the City limits.

Applications are due by Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at 5 p.m. in the Office of the Spokane City Council, 7th Floor, City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. The committee will consider applications in September and is expected to make a recommendation to the City Council the latter part of October.

Grant applications will be evaluated based on a number of criteria, including the:

  • Project’s ability to generate new hotel/motel stays.
  • Community economic impact resulting from tourism.
  • Potential for long-term impact (such as Bloomsday or Hoopfest).
  • Coordination with community organizations, hotels/motels and other regional entities.

Lodging tax funds will not be granted for capital or construction projects.

High-tech careers traded for goodies

11Aug

Mike Levinson holds up a plate of specialties from Celebrations, a Cookie and Cupcake Boutique in front of the store, which he owns with wife Christina, at 713 W. Garland Ave. The shop makes gourmet cupcakes and cookies and will have its grand opening during the Garland Street Fair Saturday.

If Mike and Christina Levinson were looking for a career that can whip up smiles faster than buttercream frosting, they’ve found it.

The Spokane couple gave up careers working for high-tech companies to bake away their days with gourmet cupcakes and homemade cookies dipped in premium chocolates.

Mike Levinson says they tired of the travel time and fast pace.

“My wife and I are both foodies and have been foodies for a long time,” he says. “Baking is something that just came very naturally.”

They purchased the business, formerly called Celebrations, A Specialty Cake and Cookie Company, from Vicki Trefry

National Geographic’s Wildest Dream

11Aug

This Special Engagement IMAX feature shows

SPECIAL ENGAGEMENT

Rated G – Runtime 90 minutes

Eighty-five years after George Mallory s final attempt to summit Mount Everest, The Wildest Dream explores Mallory s obsession with becoming the first person to reach the highest place on Earth. Told through the explorer s poignant and evocative letters to his wife, Ruth, previously unseen photos and film archive from 1924 (restored from the original nitrate especially for the film), dramatization and a modern-day expedition retracing the original route taken in 1924, Mallory s incredible adventure lives again. The expedition was led by renowned mountaineer Conrad Anker, whose life became inextricably linked with Mallory s after he found Mallory s body on Everest in 1999. Using replica 1920s-era clothing and equipment, Anker sets out to solve the great mystery of whether Mallory succeeded in summiting Everest before he died he was last seen just 800 feet from the summit before the clouds closed in and he disappeared into legend. The most heartbreaking clue: All of Mallory s belongings were found intact on his body, except the photograph of his beloved Ruth, which he promised to leave at the top of the world if he succeeded.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Anthony Geffen and produced by Geffen and Claudia Perkins, The Wildest Dream is narrated by Liam Neeson and features the voices of Ralph Fiennes as George Mallory, the late Natasha Richardson as Ruth Mallory, Hugh Dancy as Mallory s fellow climber Sandy Irvine and Alan Rickman as Noel Odell, the last person to see Mallory alive. Mike Medavoy is the executive producer. Peter Miller is the editor, and Mark Halliley is the edit producer and writer. The directors of photography are Ken Sauls and Chris Openshaw. Joel Douek composed the music, which was recorded with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and includes the song Edge of Heaven by Lisbeth Scott.

Spokane Will Celebrate Lincoln Street Project Completion

11Aug

Lincoln Street Tour August 12th

Lincoln Street is nearing completion! Join Spokane Mayor Mary Verner for a tour and celebration at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 12, of the project. The tour will start at Lincoln Street and 19th Avenue, then walk to the park, and end at the Cannon Hill Park pond.

The street remains closed to traffic today as final work is completed. Information on when the street will open will be shared as soon as it’s available.

“This project has become a site of innovation in Spokane,” says Mayor Mary Verner, “Working with the neighborhood, we were able to come up with a design to not only repair the street but also install beautiful storm garden planters.”

Work on Lincoln Street, a $1.7 million project funded by the 10-Year Street Bond and City of Spokane Waste water Department, began in April and will wrapped up in the coming days. The project rehabilitated Lincoln Street from 17th to 29th avenues and installed curb extensions that contain plant-based storm gardens to naturally treat storm water runoff. Additionally, the treated storm water will drain into the Cannon Hill Park pond saving thousands of gallons of drinking water each year.

The other Street Bond projects that will be constructed this year include:

  • Second Avenue from Sunset Highway to Howard Street;
  • Addison and Standard streets from Francis Avenue to Colton Street;
  • 37th Avenue from Grand Boulevard to Perry Street;
  • Northwest Boulevard from Alberta to Maple Streets;
  • Nevada Street from North Foothills Drive to Broad Avenue;
  • Thurston Avenue from Arthur to Crestline Streets;
  • Wellesley Avenue from Maple to Division Streets;
  • Hartson and 11th Avenues from Havana to Sherman Street;
  • Nelson Street from Mission to Marshall Avenues and surrounding streets;
  • A Street from Francis to Beacon Avenues and surrounding streets;
  • Madison, Adams, and Jefferson Streets from Sprague to Fourth Avenues; and
  • A number of Local Improvement Districts (LIDs) that will pave dirt streets in the City.
  • About the 10-Year Street Bond

    Approved by voters on November 2, 2004, with an overwhelming 61.3 percent “yes” vote, this $117 million bond is funding the repair of 110 miles of deteriorating streets throughout the City of Spokane. For more information, please go to SpokaneStreets.org.

About Esmeralda Golf Course

Esmeralda, constructed in 1956, is located in northeast Spokane at 3933 East Courtland Ave. Esmeralda offers open space and flat fairways lined with over 2,000 trees. The combination of attributes makes this superbly maintained course an easy one to break 100 on and tough to break par. Esmeralda’s layout lends itself to all levels of golfing skills. Rex Schultz is the Head Professional.

About Downriver Golf Course

Downriver, located at 3225 Columbia Circle, is one of the oldest golf courses in the Spokane area and was built in 1916. The golf course is heavily treed, lies along the Spokane River and is bordered by Riverside State Park. Over the years Downriver has become a community favorite. Steve Conner is the Head Professional.

Qualchan is the Golf Division’s newest golf course, offering a new dimension to golf in the Spokane area. A creek meandering throughout the course, five ponds, wooded and hilly areas, a few holes with open beauty, and well protected greens add a new treat to Spokane’s enthusiasts. Qualchan is located at 301 East Meadowlane Road in a very natural setting which provides a sanctuary for many species of birds and wildlife. North Spokane Hotels

07Aug

There are a Few Hotels in North Spokane

But none are more friendly than the Apple Tree Inn which is located just behind Rosauers shopping center in north Spokane Washington. If you are planning a trip or just a get away from your home take a close look at the Apple Tree Inn.

The only reason I am telling you about this is because I stayed there and was very happy with the room and the service I received while there. Also the location is great because there are lots of different places within walking distance. Places like shopping centers, restaurants and retail stores. There are lots of people in this part of town to, so if you are a social butterfly like me you will fit right in. I do like hotels that are in the woods too, don’t get me wrong. But I like lots of things to choose from at times and this place has it all.

Spokane is a great place to visit because the cost of living is less than what you will find on the west coast of Washington. In fact it is almost 3 times more expensive in the Seattle area.

A short drive from the Apple Tree Inn and you could be in the woods anyway… In fact only about a 10 minute drive in most directions will take you to uninhabited places such as lakes, rivers, walking paths, bike paths, hiking and much more.

The Apple Tree Inn is located in north Spokane not to far from the Y. With affordable rates, great rooms and great service, you won’t be dissapointed staying there. Very close to major shopping centers such as Rosars, Safeways, Walmart and many others. In fact the location is swamped with many different establishments you will have a taste of everything. Several strip malls filled with a wide variety of everything.
